API 6D Ball Valve Testing and NDE Requirements

Most purchasing mistakes happen because the buyer focuses on the shell pressure rating and ignores the test package. API 6D gives the purchaser a way to make the test scope explicit.

• Shell test: each valve must withstand a hydrostatic shell test at 1.5 times the 100°F working pressure rating, or at a pressure specified by the purchaser for the actual design temperature.

• Keep cavity relief information in the maintenance file. On liquid lines, never assume the cavity cannot create overpressure. The seat design and the operating manual must agree.
• Track seat test results over time. If seat leakage increases after repeated cycling, plan maintenance before the line requires an emergency shutdown.
• Recheck actuator torque margin. Wear, lubrication changes, and differential pressure can increase required torque after installation.

Finally, remember that API 6D is a design and testing specification. A manufacturer can build a valve to API 6D without carrying the API Monogram. If the monogram is required, the purchase contract must say so explicitly, and the nameplate must support it.
